The outer layer of the cornea may be removed to help riboflavin absorption.

The cornea is exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light for about 30 minutes, activating the riboflavin to strengthen the collagen fibers.

The eye is rinsed, and a bandage contact lens is applied to aid healing.
